Description

On September 10, 2024, as part of the 2024-25 Restoration Project Brown Bag Science Speaker Series, Kevin Buffington of USGS shared the latest research and modeling results on the potential sea level rise threat to South Bay tidal marshes and restoration sites. Accelerating sea-level rise threatens tidal wetland ecosystems if accretion processes are unable to keep pace. Prior studies have explored vulnerability to tidal wetlands across the San Francisco Bay delta, however south San Francisco Bay has been understudied in this regard. Buffington is focusing his efforts on the 12,000+ hectares of marshes across Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
