Description

In recent years, there has been increased funding, political support and press coverage, along with high-attention publications on the importance of multi-objective projects combining flood protection, habitat restoration, public access features, and equitable community engagement – particularly under the banner of sea-level rise resilience or shoreline adaptation with a framework related to nature-based solutions or engineering with nature. However, these inspiring visions for complex, multi-objective projects are often thwarted by the difficulties of actually implementing them. In this presentation, using examples from the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project of successes and remaining struggles in meeting challenges of permitting, easements, finding clean fill, and working around existing infrastructure, Dave Halsing will address this important question: If Everyone Wants Multi-Objective Project, Why Are They So Hard to Do?
