Restoration Work Days

Partners such as Save The Bay, the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, and Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful host restoration work days throughout the year on Restoration Project areas. You can help Bay wildlife by volunteering a couple hours to help pull weeds, plant native species, or improve nesting areas at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Eden Landing Ecological Reserve. Check Meetings & Events to sign up for upcoming work days.

Nursery Volunteer Days

Do you like working with native plants? Is your ideal day spent with your hands in the dirt or simply outdoors? The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) is looking for regular nursery volunteers to transplant seedlings and assist with other tasks at its Fremont nursery to prepare for restoration planting at Eden Landing, Alviso, and at the South Bay Shoreline Project. Volunteer days are on Wednesdays between 7am - 3pm. You can join for a couple of hours or the entire day. As a volunteer, you will learn about native plant species, remove weeds, and assist with general nursery upkeep. Those interested can email Laura Echávez Montenegro at [email protected] for more information and to arrange orientation.

Help Scientific Research

Partner San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) depends on an extensive crew of volunteers for scientific monitoring and outreach work, such as counting and tagging birds, or introducing the public to birds. Find out how to get involved at SFBBO's volunteer page.

Volunteer with Other Refuge Activities

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge has historically offered multiple opportunities for volunteers, including work in environmental education, maintenance, resource management and at the native plant nursery. This program was on hold during the pandemic, but opportunities are starting to return. You can find out about them through the Refuge's non-profit partner, the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society, on its Volunteer webpage. More opportunities may be at the Refuge's Get Involved page.
