Description

Help improve the nesting success of threatened western snowy plovers at a Ravenswood habitat restoration event where you get to stomp around in the mud and throw around shells!

Volunteers can join San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) staff at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Don Edwards Refuge in Menlo Park to carry and spread oyster shells for the benefit of plovers. These birds nest in salt flats, where their eggs and chicks can get eaten by predators. The oyster shells help camouflage nests, eggs, and chicks.

Volunteers should be prepared for a short carpool drive on a graded dirt road. This event will involve carrying 5-10 pound buckets over potentially soft or slippery ground. Volunteers may also need to climb up and down from a boardwalk that is about 5 feet off the ground.

The event is at the Dumbarton Bridge Vista Point and Trail in Menlo Park. SFBBO Staff will direct you where you can park.

Health: If you feel sick, please stay home and inform SFBBO that you need to cancel. Get well soon!

Please register here. Additional information will be provided in the confirmation email.

What to Bring:

  • Protective clothing: clothes you don't mind getting dirty, sun protection, layers, please bring rubber boots if you have them, the pond is likely to be very muddy
  • Snacks and water: we will provide some, but you are welcome to bring your own as well. lease bring appropriate clothing that can get dirty (mud boots, layers, sun protection).
