Description

You can join us to help improve the nesting success of threatened western snowy plovers at the Ravenswood Ponds!

Partner San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) will host a volunteer and scientist event to stomp nesting holes in the mud and scatter oyster shells for camouflage at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Menlo Park. These activities increase ground and pond texture and habitat complexity, helping the birds camouflage their nests so they can better evade predators.

Register here to get needed meeting site details.

Need to know: Volunteers should be prepared for a short carpool drive on a graded dirt road. This event will involve carrying 5- to 10-pound buckets over potentially soft or slippery ground. Volunteers may also need to climb up and down from a boardwalk that is about 5 feet off the ground. There are no restrooms at the site so please plan accordingly.

What to Bring:

  • Clothes: the pond is likely to be very muddy – wear protective clothing you don't mind getting dirty, sun protection, layers, and rubber boots if you have them.
  • Snacks and water: SFBBO will provide some, but you are welcome to bring your own as well.
Health Warning: If you feel sick, please stay home and inform us that you need to cancel. Get well soon!
